Etudes for an Astronaut

“Etudes for an Astronaut” is a solo of one man’s search for his place in the universe.  It is about big aspirations, poetic attempts and small steps forward.  This entity of body/mind/spirit is both bound to this physical plane, yet boundless in its potential for vastness; our human attempts at understanding sometimes futile and absurd, valiant and poignant – we make our peace in between.

La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival, which takes place in all three of our venues and features over 50 emerging and seasoned choreographers, reflects La MaMa’s longstanding mission to performance that transcends politics and unifies cultures.

La MaMa Moves! is made possible, in part, with the generous support of The Ford Foundation, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, Jerome Robbins Foundation, Harkness Foundation for Dance, New York Community Trust, The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, Dr. Gerald J. & Dorothy R. Friedman Foundation, NYSCA and DCA.

“Finishing up, the series encompasses several mini-festivals. The nine troupes that are part of “Israel/New York” include several New York-based expat outfits (LeeSaar, Deganit Shemy), but most of them are making their U.S. débuts. “Intricate Intimacies” zooms in on solos, duets, and trios, with a promising lineup that includes Judith Sanchez Ruiz, Will Rawls, and the Ailey company’s Abdur-Rahim Jackson. Heidi Latsky also brings the latest version of her piece “The Gimp Project: If,” which presents physical disabilities as not being disabilities at all” (The New Yorker).
