The Thin Line Between Here and There: The Latest ArtUp exhibition on the 70 E. 4th Street Cultural Center Scaffolding Bridge
“There is a narrow boundary between inner peace and inner turmoil. Virtue and darkness are conflicting forces within us all and directly influence our minds. It’s up to the individual to balance these forces wisely.
In Thailand we often attempt to become closer to inner peace by contemplating in a sacred place, such as a temple. In this installation, The Thin Line Between Here and There, three Thai artists have reimagined an ordinary construction scaffolding structure as a place of sanctuary in the form of a roadside temple. Using symbolic iconography, the cyclical episodes of celestial peacefulness and the unrest of everyday life are depicted simultaneously here separated by Nāga, a sacred animal who devotes himself as a stairway to heaven. These three elements are common themes in traditional mural painting and sculpture in Thailand’s temples.”
Artists: Sarasin Chatvichitkul, Pairoj Pichetmetakul and Udom Surangsophon of the Thai Artists Alliance*
