Let Nuyorican Poets Cafe Take You into the New Year

14 Dec

What East Village hotspot crams music, theater, and poetry slams onto “the biggest little stage on earth?”

The Nuyorican Poets Café, at 236 E. 3rd St. between Ave. B&C.

The second half of December promises such feats as tonight’s Leave Out the Violence-U.S. Open Mic at 7pm and the Latinos NYC Poetry Showcase at 7pm on Dec. 23rd. The 10th annual Fresh Fruit GLBT Playhouse will celebrate the artistic expression of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender voices at 7pm on December 18th. To perform at this event, contact polcovar18@gmail.com.

Of course there are frequent performance opportunities at staple events like Open Mic Monday and Wednesday Night Slam Open Mic, and at special open mics like the Got No Turkey Poetry Slam and Open Mic (Saturday, December 24th at 7pm), and the Songwriters Slam* (Tuesday, December 20th at 9pm).

But perhaps you’re a matinee sort of person. If so, come for free at 3pm. on December 17, to the Urban Word NY Knicks Poetry Slam Sun Semifinals. You’ll see the city’s most precocious teen poets slam off for the chance to perform on Broadway.

Into current events? Here’s one: On December 15-17, the Nuyorican will hold the Spoken Word Almanac Project 2011. Arrive at 7pm sharp to see “A Year in Review from a Poet’s Point of View,” the news headlines of 2011 presented spoken word style.

The Nuyorican’s have got soul, and it is the soul of this city. Come and hear for yourself, from the middle to the end of December, and after that, too.

*You can win a feature spot at the Nuyorican after playing original music at the Songwriter Slam.
