HTTG Gearing Up for the Holidays (already) with The Drafts!
25 Oct
Not everybody gets what they want for Christmas, but Horse Trade Theater Group’s resident acting ensemble, The Drafts, certainly did. They might be recognizable from their monthly Drafts Monthly Reading Series, wherein they develop and help bring life to the works of new artists. When they commissioned Michael R. McGuire to write a holiday show for their ensemble, The Drafts asked for “something about a space monster dressed as Santa Claus (a disguise he uses to annihilate the human race) and of course, deep Elf romance.” McGuire is not new to The Drafts. His play It Comes From Beyond was featured in their Drafts Lab in September of last year, and he contributed True Space Romance to Drafts Fest 2012: When Half the Sphere is Visible. Indeed, Michael R. McGuire and The Drafts both seem to share an affection for Sci-Fi.
The holidays have already come to Horse Trade Theater Group, as McGuire seems to have filled out The Drafts’ Christmas list. Their December mainstage, also titled It Comes From Beyond!, directed by Horse Trade Theater Group’s Artistic Director, Heidi Grumelot, is a menagerie of American cultural and media archetypes exploring xenophobia, fate and what it means to be a monster. Calling their characters in promotional material by the names of their tropes, the show will follow the Bombshell who’s targeted the Square to be her new boyfriend, much to the chagrin of her ex-boyfriend the Hotshot. While the Square’s calculations foretell the coming of something from Beyond and the impending end of the world, all the Bombshell wants is to go to the monster movie playing in town, followed by holy matrimony.
Sounds like Christmas with the Drafts. Featuring a diverse cast of talented and eager performers, Horse Trade is promising a wild, funny and slightly absurdist show this holiday season.
It Comes From Beyond! will run December 6-15, 2012,Thursday-Saturday @ 7pm in The Red Room
